Anti-Abortion Group Threatens Journal

by Steve Geimann

"You will be hunted down and tried for genocide"

The New England Journal of Medicine stepped up security Thursday after receiving a fax from Operation Rescue that characterized as "Nazi-like" a published study on two widely available drugs that can be used to perform abortions.

Randall Terry of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue said the study and practice was "nothing more than chemical warfare against children."

The Journal reported Dr. Richard Hausknecht of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York found that a common anti-cancer drug combined with an anti-ulcer medicine induces abortions in women in the early stages of pregnancy.

"Let Richard Hausknecht and every chemical assassin who follows him be forewarned: when abortion is made illegal again, you will be hunted down and tried for genocide,"Terry said in the fax, reported by Reuter.

"There's no threat in the fax but it's just nasty," Editor Jerome Kassirer told Reuters. "But things have happened before in relation to this issue and I think it would have been irresponsible for me not to do that [add security]."
