map AUGUST 27, 2001 -- Israelis flying Apache helicopters attack the West Bank town of Tulkarem, destroying a Palestinian police station. The military says that action is retaliation for yesterday's drive-by murder of Israeli colonist Dov Roizman, 58. A splinter group of Fatah claims credit for the ambush.

The killing of businessman Roizman receives little attention, however, because it is eclipsed by two incidents that happened just hours before -- the bold Palestinian raid on an Israeli military camp (see item 1) and the roadside ambush of an Israeli family that left three dead.

Late on Saturday, Aug. 25, Palestinian terrorists fired on a car driving through the West Bank on Route 443, which connects Jerusalem with the capitol of Tel Aviv. Killed immediately are husband and wife Yaniv and Sharon Ben-Shalom. Their two infants are lightly wounded. A fifth passenger, Doron Siviri, died of injuries the next day.

"What happened on Route 443 crossed a red line," Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer tells the Jerusalem Post. "I won't allow citizens of Israel to become shooting targets on the roads for murderers." Route 443 is one of the many "bypass" highways built in the West Bank by Israel which are intended to bypass populated Palestinian areas. Only cars with Israeli license plates are allowed to use these roads.
